Frankfort, Ky., April 20.- A sensaticn was created here just before the time for the senate to meet Tuesday morning. It was known that Mr. Hager, the new Democratie senator, had arrived with his certifícate and would be sworn in during the morning. But when the train came in it bore Senator Ogilvie, the sick Democrat, who has not been here before this session. This made the üenate full for the first time this session, with 138 members n a joint session, 70 Republkans and 68 Democrats, and 70 once more necessary to a choice. It put Hunter one vote further from an election, and made more certain the impossibility of his election than has the indictment or any other occurrence this session. It also made it necessary for any new nominee to receive more votes to secure an election. Cfud from Dr. Hunter. Th ose who have up to this time doubted that Dr. Hunter, the indicted Republican nominee for the United States senate, would withdraw gave up all hope Tuesday morning when they learned that he had issued the following statement over his own signature: "I have gone over the whole situation carefully, and I admit that I do not know where my one vote is to come from. ITnder the circumstances I am to say that I shall not prolong the flght beyond a reasonable time when I see that it is hopeless. This proceeding before the grand jury has had absolutely nothing to do with my change of front. It has not been a factor in the fight except to solidify and strengthen the loyalty of my friends. It was simply a transparent conspiracy to defame me.. "W. GODFREY HUNTER." New Man i il Doubt. Just when he will withi raw is a matter that is as yet doubtful, but in all probability he will get out of the race nam very soon. But he will not do so until he and his supporters have settled on a man to become the nominee of the new caucus. Who that man will be is doubtful, but it is generally conceded that the fight will be between Judge W. H. Holt and Senator W. J. Deboe. The latter has the best chance, as Hunter is, said to be core on Judge Holt because he has not taken off his coat and worked for him as Deboe has. Loolts ïike a Dying Mari. When the joint assembly niet Tuesday both the new senator and Senator Ogilvie were on hand. Many pronounced th- bringlng here of Senator Ogilvie, who looks like a dying man, a crying shame. There Avas no Journal reáding, but the Blackburn Democrats demanded a preliminary roll cali. The latter showed present and unpaired 108 and 55 necessary to a choice. The fifty-first ballot begun but all voted as they have heretofore and the ballot stood: Huntei-, 53: Blackburn, 38; Martin, 12; Boyle, 5; Stone, 1. Neces?ary to choice 55. Nearly all the Republicans opposed to Dr. Hunter were absent and paired. Stege was away without a pair and this explained why Hunter carne within two of an election even with Hager and Ogilvie here. TS'o Slotion to Ad.jouvn. No motion for adjournment was made and the flfty-second ballot began. The announcement that the Bell-Crumbaugh con test would come up caused a great deal of excitement, for should the Demoorat, Bell, be seated, the strict party vote would be a tie - 69 and 69- just as it stood during the memorable session last winter. This would give the Blaokburn people a fighting chance, something they have not had since the session last winter, their present policy being sol e] y to prevent an election. The second and third ballots showed exactly as did the first, after which the general assembly adjourned on mtítion of Senator Bennett, a Hunter man.
