lor the hrst time in lts history, tne Chicago University has won the oratorical debate. Michigan has the satisfaction in its defeat, however, of knowing that its champion, W. M. Chandler, had the best individual ranking of the six debaters. His cornpanions, however, were not able to bring up the average, and the U. of M. was beaten. So narrow was Chicago's margin that its total, according to the judges' system of niarking. was but one greaterthan that of the visitors. Kent theater was well filled last night to hear the debate. Those who went from here to Chicago to uphold Michigan in the negative side of the argument "Resolved, That the British system of cabinet government is better adapted to democratie institutions than the American spstem of presidential government," were J. S. Lathers, F. X. Carmody and W. M. Chandler. The speakers for the affirmative were G. B. Watson, E. M. Vaughan and B. B. Barker, of Chicago.
