W. L. Bnuting is going into the meat business in couuectiou with his grocery on N. Main st. The Hiram Welch estáte case, from Manchester, bas been ainicably settled between the widow and the heirs, in the probate court. J. Harvey Davis, of Ypsilanti, aged 64 years, a former east side jeweler, and for 61 years a resident of that city, died yesterday. The baseball game at athletio park yesterday afternoon between the U. of M. and All Chicago High Schools teams was won by the U. of M. 's by a score of 26 to 11. James O. Smitb, a carpenter, died at his home 74 Catherine st., Wednesday, aged 58 yeais, 4 months and 15 days. The funeral services will be held this afternoon. North Michigan is a long way to go to get electrio ligbt poles, but that is where the Ann Arbor Electric Co. went to get the supply of fine poles they have been unloading this week. Samnel Post, of Ypsilanti, has been appointed by Governor Pingree a member of the board of control of the Michigan asylum for the insane for six years iu place of W. J. Stuart, of Grand Rapids. Jacob Sturm has levied upon the land of Chas. Estleman, who set fire to his own property in the town of York to secure the insurance. The amount of the judgment is $169.46, with costs of 3.10. The firm of Holcorab, Son & Co., which carne to Ann Arbor, March 20, frorn Brooklyu, and bought out D. A. Tinker & Son, have not made a howling success of the business and are moving the stock of goods to Northville. The circuit couit calendar for the May term contains 65 cases, of which 14 are criminal, 30 issues of fact, 4 issues of law, 7 first class chancery, 1 third class chancery, and 10 fourth class chancery. The jury is called for Tuesday next at 0 o'clock a. m. A new telephone line will soon be constructed and in operation from Detroit to the Wayne county house and will probably be extended on to Ypsilauti aud Ann Arbor. The Modern Woodinen of America will give their first annual May Party on Tuesday evening, May 11, at Liglit Infantry armory. Prof. George Hempl's new work "Germán Urthograpby and Phonology" bas just been issued irom the press of Ginn & Co. It is in two parts. the first dealing with. orthography and phonology, aud the second presenting an alphabetical list of difficnlt words with their pronunciation indicated by the phcnetic method. Victor E. Francois, instructor in Frenoh at the U. of M., has just editod for school use "L'Abbe Constantin, a Cornedy iu Three Acts by Heotor Cremienx and Pierre Decourcelle. Adapted from the classic romance of Lndovic Halvey. " The book is a 12mo, 111 pages, and comes from tbe presses of the American Book Corapany. Patrick Brenuau, a well known shoemaker of this city, died at his home 11S. Ingallsst. , yesterday morning of dropsy, from which he had snffered for two or three years, aged 71 years. The deceased leaves a wife, four daughters and one son. The funeral services will be held at St. Thomas chuorh tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock. Burial in St. Thomas' cemetery. Twenty-four members of the Ann Arbor Pedro Club went to Ypsilanti Tuesday night and enjoyed the best party they have had this season at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Heury Schneider. Mrs. George Dengler and Martin Schaller won tbe head prizes and Mrs. Sid W. Millard and Will Binder the booby prizes. At a little af ter 12 the rnerry party returned to Ann Arbor by a speoial motor. Rev. E. D. Kelly gave a delightful banqu )t at tbe Cock house, Wednesday evening to the St. Thomas choir and dramatio club. After the inner man bad been satisfied an interesting program of music and speeches with a sketch from Julius Caesar by Fr. Kelly, was rendered and greatly enjoyed. Miss Nona V. (VBrien aoting as toastmaster. In closing the evening's enjoyment Fr. Kelly thanked the choir and dramatic club in the warmest terms for the assiftance they have given him in tbe past.
