A pioneer of nearly 60 years' residence in Washtenaw county was taken away by the death of John Armbruster, sr., at his home 60 E. Washington st., Ann Arbor, on Monday evening. Mr. Armbruster had suffered a long illness during which he received the utmost care and attention from his wife and children. John Armbruster was born in Dettlingen, Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, Germany, Nov. 30, 1817, and came to this country in 1838, landing in New York on July 4, of that year. After working two years for his father he commenced to work for Jet Ingalls in this city for $144 a year and at the end of two years purchased 80 acres of new land, the purchase price of which was $500, of which he paid $250. Sept. 5, 1842, he located on it as his home and later added another 80 acres to it. He lived there until 1866 when he bought 160 acres of the old Holmes farm in Pittsfield, three miles south of this city. Twelve years later he bought a nice property in this city and has since resided here.
Mr. Armbruster was first married Aug. 27, 1842, to Miss Elizabeth Neithammer, of Scio. They had a family of seven children, George, of Lodi, John, Herman, Reuben, and Regina (Mrs. John Beek), of Aun Arbor, Aaron, of Pittsfleld, and Oscar, of Ypsilanti. He was again married Ang. 18, 1877, to Mrs. Louisa Walz, who with their daughter Laura, also survives him. The funeral services held yesterday afternoou weie largely atteuded, all the childreu of the deceased except Oscar, who is verf sick, being present. The services were conducted by Rev. J. C. R. Speckmanu, and the re uiiiins were interred iu Forest Hill cemetery. The five sous of the deceased and bis son-iu-law, John Beck, aoted as pallbearers.
