From there he will will go to Washington to complete arrangemeutu for assuming the duties of minister to Turkey. He will return to Anu Arbor before leaving for his new posiion. The committee to have personal and immediate oharge of the construction of the bicycle path to Whitmore Lake consista of Warren JE. Walker, J. J. Goodyear, Dr. O. G. Darling, Aid. Frank Vandawarker, J. D. Ryan and Juuius E. Beal. They are a good lot of men to push the matter along. A portion of the track at the fair grounds has been put in shape for bioylers at an expense of $50. Horsemen can still use the track, however, but must not drive within 10 feet of tbe pole or they will beforbidden the use of tbe grounds as that portion must be protected for the wheelmen, Superintendent Mills says. The Lyra concert held in the society hall last evening was replete with good singing and music. The soprano solos of Master Fred Daley the contralto solo of Mis. E. H. Kempf, the baritone solo of Mr. Spitzley, and the violin solo of Mr. Frauk Smicb, were all eucored. The singing of the maennerchor was as usual excellent and the fine playing of the Ann Arbor orchestra was a surprise even to its friends. James O. Srnith, of 74 Catherine st., died April 28, and oue week later, on Weduesday of this week, his wife Mis. Julia A. Smith, was also dead. She :ook to her bed on the day of Mr. Smith's, funeral and gradually sank away. Sbe was 58 years of age. The [uneral services were held at St. Thomas' cburch yesterday morning and sbe was buried beside her husaand in St. Thomas' cemetery. The teachers and school trustees o' (he county will be glad to know that the oounty board of school iuspecfors, whioh met at the court house on Tuesday, appointed M. J. Cavanaugh, to serve as school commissiuner until July !, tbe time at which Mr. Lister will assutue the duties of the office. It was the desire of the Board to have au experienced man to close up Mr. Wedemeyer's term. The appointment is a popular one. Since 1876 over 4,000 patents relating to bicycles have been issued by the patent office and at least half of these jave been issned ia the last six years. It now takes the labor of eight expert assistant examiners to handle tbe appücations of oycle inventors, and even with this force there is always a big batch of applioations awaiting exatninations. There is no country in the world tbat shows a similar rate of growth in the same line. These are hard tims. We let our timber rot and buy fencing. We throw away our ashes and buy soap. We raise dogs and buy hogs. We let our manare go to waste. We grow weeds and buy vegetables and brooms. We catoh 5c. fish with a $4 rod. We build school houses and send our children away to be educated. And lastly we seud our boys out with a $40 gun and a $10 dog to hunt 10c birds - Horner Vidette. More lamentable than all tbe above is the fact that we edúcate $10,000 gids and they marry 10c. dndes.-
