Is it not within the power of the eomnion councilj to present Marshall with thatstoue crusher and road roller? Vould not the city be better off if this were done? Ann Arbor willj be rennmbered. For only a couple of months longer 'Will it be possible tojwalk a fnll block and find that yoifjhave only walked from No. 35 to No.35)-. The Argus by constantly keepingjat it has done itg dnty to the publio. The tnatter[of paving Main street has been making rapid progresa lately and a committee of the city fatbers is endeavoring to'get the legislature to allow the city tojbond itself to allow the improvement to be made, the bonds to be paid in fonr years. Is it not about time that the connoil had a report froin the City Cemetery board. The fifth ward cemetery is well kept and well cared for but it wonld be a little better if the city took more interest in it and saw that things were done acoording to law. When have the commissioners reported and how often are they elected? Will some alderman answer? The street work done ou S. University avenue this year has been done largely without authority of dharter or law. An appropriation of 350 was made for oae side of the roadway and then, without any fnrther action of the conncil, the other side is covered with Btooe at an expense several times as large. Of course it may be said that the street committee of the council ordered it. But the street committee is not the council and has no power ■whatever to order any work done. They can only recommennd to the conucil and a yea and nay vote must be had so that every taxpayer can see just who is responsible. Any taspayer can now enjoin the f arther prcsecution of the work on this avenue or any othei where the same oourae is pnrsued. It is high time that city improvements were made in accordance with the law, and not in auy such haphazard way as has been the case in this city. The lawfnl way is also the common sense way. The proper way when any improvemeat is needed is for the council to have tbe board of public works estímate the cost oi the proposed improvement. The conncil should then in tbe light of this stiruate determine whether or not it has the funds to make it and if they desire it to be done should make an appropriation f Dr it, and the improvement should be kept strictly within the approptiation. If this wore done in all oases, the city funds wuuld be in better shape at the end of the year and onr streets wonld be none the woise off.
