Ann Albor, Mich., Aiig. 18, 1897 To the Editor of the Argus: We desire to cali the attention of a many WashteDaw farmers as possible to the follovriug clippings believing tha: both are of the ntruost iiuportauce to them. The smnt evil is a very serious matter this year and if it can be avoid ed by the ose of so simple a reruedy as hot water, there should be no sruut grown. Our iuvestigations lead ns to believe that the remedy proposed wili entirely eliminte smut in wheat. We are, Yours Trnly, ALLMEND1NQER & SCHNEIÜER. The wheat erop of 189? will bring to the farmers of the Uuited States the enornious som of $400,000,000. This ainouot is wel] uigb incomprehensible, and the benefits to be derived from the fair orop and the good prioes oannot be over-setimated. The wheat price' is good becanse the world's snpply is decreasing. On account of the world's shortage wheat will be a profitable erop for at leasP two years to come, and if parts of the world shall have partial wheat failures in the meantime, there will be good mouey in wheat for even fonr or five years. It wiJl require the aGcumnlation of several big crops the world over to cause a burdensoine surplus. One farmer said the otherday: "I have TO acres of land under cultiavtion and I shall sow just 70 aores to wheat. " Tbe wise agriculturist in this section Wil] make carefnl selectinn of his seed wheat, cultívate and fertilize his ground thoroughïy, aud plant to wheat as mauy aores as his teams can plow. To treaè seed wheat so as to cure it of smut take half a bushei cf seed in a wire basket or perforated vessel and imiaerse it in water heated a temperature of 110 degrees Fahr. Then immerse the seed for a few minutes in scalding water at 133 (o 133 degrees Fahr., but not in auy case above 135 degrees. Keep the waters at an eveu tetaperature by adding hot water. The amount of scalding water should be eight times as great as the seed treated, aud tbe thermometer should be consultad all the time the wheat is in the scalding water. Spread the cleaned wheat out thinly on the floor or ou a jauvas to dry. Then flnally place it in bags that have been boiled 15 minntes, or in new bags. It is best to treat wheat jnst before planting.
