At 12:30 o'clock Tnesday night fir was discovered in Bd. Croarkin's cloth ing stoie on tbe south side of Main st. Dexter, bot, was fortnately extinguishec bef ore any great damage bad been done, althongh bad it remained nndis covered for a sbort time longer, noth ing wonld have preveuted its spread t tbe neigbboriug stores and a seriou conflagration would have resulted. It is supposed that tbe tire oiiginatec from tbe bursting of a kerosene oi lamp which was left alight in tbe rea end of the store, tbe blaze from whic set fire to tbe floor aud bnrned a hol five or six feet in diameter. The fir spread to tbe joists of the building anc from that to the stairway in the rear of the store, between it and Jedele's nieat market. The residents of the village worked like beavers and ere long had the fire nnder control, bnt not before the flames were coming out over the landing towards the front stairway. The fire department at Ann Arbor vras applied to for assistanoe and the steam fire engine was got ready to send to Dexter, bnt before it left Ann Arbor word was received that tbe fire was uuder control and their services uot needed. The stock of clothing was badly damaged by smoke, estirnated at $800, while it will take $200 to repair the damage to the store.
