In au article in Timber (London) on tbe value of teak for structural and raechauical purposes the claim is put forth that such wood is really tbe ruost durable timber kuown and of special impor tacce to sbipbuilders, being very bard, yet light, easily worked, and, tbougb porous, strorig and lastiug. It is soon seasoned, sbriujjs but little, aud pu accouut of its oiïy naiurè doei not injure irou. Iu Boutbeastern Asia it is not only considered tbe best njaterial for ship coustruction, but for house carpeuiry and other work vhere strength and other lasting qualities are required. It is rarely attacked by ants of the white species, and its rare dnrability renders it specially valuable in a climate like tbat of India, where the elements causing decay are so numeroua and powerful, where d;mipness brings on rapid decompositiou, and where the white ant devours without scrupJe. In the ( operaticn of cutting thia wood is frequently girdled one or two years before it is felled, and, thus exposed to tbe wind, tbe action of the sun and to the ' pumping capacity of the leaves, it 6ons rapidly and is drier and lighter than timber felled green.
