According to the best authorities upon the subject, the idea of using white talo in the manufacture of pipes is of comparatively recent date, compared with the age of the habitof smoking, and what is still more curions is the fact that in the oriental conntries which produce white taJc, or meerachaum, as it is called, and where the use of tobáceo forms part of the education of the faithful, the people never drearu of making this substanoe into pipes. They make bowls and goblets of it, but no pipes. It tnay be that the long pipestems whicb allovv the smoke to cool and lose its acridity before reachiug tho mouth leave the oriental smoker quite indifferent in regard to the quality of the bowl.
