Southey's story is of a tame fox at Bridgwater, which had been brought np from a cnb to run in the wheel as a turnspit. One day, bowever, bis vagabond instinots proved too mnch for hiin, and he determined to take a boliday. The fleshpots of bis Egypt were as dust and ashes to his palate compared with the chickens of his own selection. ünfortunately he chose the hunting season for, his excursión, and soon camein contact with his hereditary persecutora. He evidently determined to give them a good run, ior he took them twice through a stream called the Parrot, after a grand circumbendibus, which involved a chase of nearly 'dO miles. He made his way back with hounds in full cry, and re-entering tne kitchen resumed operations in the whee] with as much unconcern as though he had never left it. The fat cook, with whom he was a great favorite, succeeded in beating the hounds off until the arrival of the huntsman, who bumanely assisted in saving a life which, if sagacity and ingenuity be virtues, well deserved to be spared.
