By the oíd Saxon Jaw a naaiden and a widow were of different value. The latter could be bonght for one-half the Buui which the guardián of the rnaid was entitled to demand. A man, therefore, who conld not afford to buy a maiden nright, perhaps, be able to purohase a widow. Tbs herd of Europeau bisons proteoted by the czars of Russia iu the forest of Bjelowski, Lithuania, uumbered 1,900 in 1856, but is uow reduced to 50Ü and shows no sign of increase. The dwindling of the herd is asoribed to inbreeding, due to the confiued urea of tue reservation.
