A sea captain has f otmd that the sails of a ship wheu filled with a number of sinall holes bear it along more rapidly thau wheu they are perfectly whole. He says that an ordinary sail cannot receive the f uil forcé of the wind, owing to the bulk of stationary air that filis up the hollow of the concave canvas.
