Demócrata will not base many hopes on cairying Ohio - or they will probably be badly disappointed wben the returns are in. Ohio is a repnblican srate. Mayor Maybury should be re-eleoted in Detroit. He has made an admirable mayor and the votera of Detroit should show their appreciation of his good work. Charles L. Rarden.of Greenville.who retires from the state pardon board, is ansious to sncceed Atty-Gen. Maynard and ex-Rep. Northwood, of New Loth' ï'op, wonld like to fill Land Commissioner French's eboes. Northwood is prominent in G. A. R. ciroles, and a close friend of Dept. Com. A. T. Bliss. The Detroit city counoil has passed an ordinance compelling the Street car company to run its cais at a speed not to esceed 10 miles an hour inside of the boulevard, thns virtually retorning to the old time slow means of transit. Tbe street car people say that with the stops they have to make the speed will not be greater tban that attained by the old norse cars. At any rate it is a death blow to rapid transit in Detroit and that city will again be relegated to a baok seat as one of tbe slowest cities on the continent of Ameria. The New York city campaiga continúes as hot as ever, but it seems to be pretty generally conceded that Van Wyck, the regalar democratie and Tammany oandidate will be elected, the betting is 2 to 1 and in his favor with few takers and the oorrespondents of rnany outside repnblicau papers wbo have visited the city, have predicted Van Wyck's sucoess. Trac wants to defeat Low, Low wants t beat Tracy, Qeorge wants to defea Van Wyok, while Van Wyck is pur suing the even tenor of his way striving to be elected himself without regard to the other fellows. Mean■while Boss Platt ie making snperhnman efforts to bring Tracy's vote above Low 's. Many outside speakers have been imponed and a campaign fond of $3,000,000 is being raised. two-thirds of which is to come from outside the city, the plntocrats of the repnblican party in the city largely favoring Low. Two weeks from next Tnesday will settle the election.
