In Abyssinia they have a very pictnresque fashion of identifying thieves. There is au official nominated for the purpose iu each district. Upon receiving information of a robber;' he gives his coniidential servant a dose of certaiu herbs, afterward a pipe of tobáceo. The man drinks and theu smokes. In dne courso he begins to rave and to crawl about on hands and knees. Then the thief catcher puts a rope about his loins, and on all fours he perambulates tlie neighborhood, sniffing like a hound, enters a house at last and goes to sleep upon the floor. That is legal evidence, of the owner's guilt. He has to pay the value of the stolen goods or to "square" the thief catcher, which, as a rule, comes to rnuch the 6aine thing.
