Spring Valley, Hls., Nov. 9.- The news that Chinamen are to be imported into the mines at Carbon Hill is not considered very seriously at this place. Men stood around the corners all morning in knots discussing this latest phase of the strike sltuation In northern Illinois. But the coolies did not interest them as much as the reponed settlement at Bracevllle, where it is reported the miners have accepted the operators' offer. The men In this part of the district are indignant over the action of the Braceville men in accepting a settlement below the scale. They claim to have the strike won, and the Spring Valley leaders say that, no matter if Braceville does return to work at a non-union scale, they will hold out until next May, if necessary, for the one formulated at Springfield. Firm for a living Wage. Ladd, Seatonville, La Salie and Peru are equally firm, The miners of La Salie had a meeting. A few days ago some sixty foreign-speaking miners signed the non-union scale. The meeting was arranged for the purpose of persuading these men from going to vork. It -met with success, and La alle is as firm for the union scale as H ver was. The labor leaders here scoff t the idea of the "coolie" movement, vhich the general Wilmington comany is of, being a success. They ay it is on'y a bluff. Said one promient leader: "What if they do succeed in working ne obscure mine with Chinamen. That oes not necessarily break the strike. We are not going to let 200 Chinamen at Carbon Hill make the price of coal digging for 2,000 white minerg of northern llinois. The very fact that the northrn Illinois operators are importing heap 'coolie' labor is an indication that :he white miners are poorly paid and vidence of the justice of their cause." Convention at Stretitor. A committee of miners from this noint of the district will probably be ent to BracevlUe for the purpose of nducing the men of that place to reconsider their late action. A delégate onvention of the northern Illinois miners will be held at Streator and an ef'ort' will also be made there to get the Braceville men to rescind that vote by which they decided to go to work below he scale. A report is current here that a settlement has been affected at Wenona under the terms of the Springfield scale. Föhn Mitchell, the district organizer, eft this city for the seat of the trouble at Braceville and Carbon Hill.
