Governor Pingree's first Thanksgiving proclamation is at band. It bas no frills or trimmings and reads as follows : To the People of the State of Michigan, Greeting : In pursnance of a time-honored custom I have the honor to hereby appoint Thnrsday, November 25, as a day of general Thanksgiving. The people of this great commonwealth are reqnested on the above narned day to abstain from the ordinary avocations of life, and devote the day to exercises and recreation appropriate to the occasion. It is a good day to forgive offenses, to gather together in fami]y reunión, to forget or suspend diiferences of opinión in religión, beliefs and politics, and to remeruber the great ncmber of needy people throughout the state, and also to do kind acts and return thanks lor the many blessings we enjoy. The spirit of pbilantbropy among Xnr citizans bas been active in providing for the needs of the suffering and the unfortanate, Christian workers ave brought many to acknowíedge their obligation to lead better lives, and coontless numbers have been made happier for their efforts during the year. For every temporal and spiritual blessing enjoyed it beoomes us to render devout thanksgiviog unto God. Given uuder my hand and the great seal of the state at the capitol at Lansing this 5 tb. day of November, in the year of onr Lord, 1897, and of the independence of the United States of America the one hundred and twentyfirst.
