New York, Dec. 28.- Edward J. Rateliffe, the actor, wlio was found guilty ïf assault in the third degree for striking- his wife, has been sentenced to six months in the penitentiary. Lawyer Towns, counsel for Ratcliffe, made a motion for a new trial, vhich was denied. Mr. Towns said that tnere was some justification for the assault. Judge Newburger looked at Mr. Towns In astonishment, and said: "I am surprised to hear counsel make such an admission." The judge, after referring to the recommendations for mercy made by the jury, said: "Wife beating raay be popular in some countries.but not in America. I propose in your case to meet out such punishment as will serve as a warning to others that they must not repeat an offense of this kind." Ratcliiïe was taken to the tiary on Blackwell's island, -svhere he will be conflned at hard labor. This does not carry with it the depri vation of civil rights that is involved in a state's prison sentence. A large cro-svd was present to hear the actor senteneed. Mrs. Rateliffe and her father, Peter de Lacey were absent.
