Now the teaüher oí the school was a man, and he was uot popular. Hewaswhat the boys called "mean. " Tbey disliked him thoroughly, froni the tips of his shiuing shoes to thefnds of his pompadour combed hair. In the eomposition there was a story of a dog. It was the story of a very mean dog, aud as the composer of the literary eft'ort canie to the last line he read it emphatically and vvith great distiuctneás of utterance, aud the hearts oLall the other sniall boys in the room, as they listeued, quaked, half with delight and half with fear, knowiug what was to follow, and gazing, fascinated, at the upright coifl'ure of the master, as the reader ended. "And that dog was so mean that his hair stood on end. " -
