The great trouble with the Pingree "reform" projeots is that they have do plaoe for eoonotny or retrencbrnent. The deruocrats will Jead a tremendons ODslaught on the gold standard in 1900. The people will endeavor to shake off English domination with the opening of the new century. The legislatnre wonld do well when ir meets again to repeal the English sparrow bounty law. It causes a large .connty expendirure of nioney without adequate expense. We have not the exact figures on hand for this county, but iDgham county has spent $11,428.19 for sparrows since Í 887, when the law was paesed. Ypsilanti merchante have done away ■with the trading stamp and coupon nnisance. A dispatoh in the Detroit Tribnne states that tbeir action bas indnced Grand Rapids naerchants to do likewise. Now, if oor Ann Arbor rnerchants would take a tumble to the fact tbat tbey are snstaining a nnmber of men in comparativa idleness at a great expense to themselves and their customers, the wily scheme would soon be a dead letter in tbis city also. The Detroit & Lima Northern railroad's Dnndee branoh failed to make conneotion at Trenton with the mails several times last week. As a resnlt the post offioe department assessed the road 250. Tbe mail trains have been running more regularly since. That's the way to do business. If all public business was oonducted along these lines it would be better and more promptly executed. There are other railroads in tbe state that need flning jnst as badly as the Detroit & Lima Northern.
