The settlement of the charges for attempted criminal assanlt againstHoward Stockwell, of Salem, Janoary 19, hasgreatly exoited the people of Salem, where sentiment rnns strongly in favor of the boy. The Plyinuntn Mail says: "Henry M. White, of near Northville, for whom Stockwell worked one season, as well as Mrs. White and her dangbter, speak in the higbest terina of Stookwell'a character and maoners while with thein. Mr. Stanbro, Dwelle Suiitb, Messrg Paokard, Gordan, Kellogg and otbei well kuown Salem people have nothing bat the most sincere praise to give turn and say tbe sentiment seems to be that the yonog man's statement is correct and that be is innooent of even any intent at wroug doing. He Btated to Mr. White and Mr. Webber, who were at tbe Ann Albor jail to see him last week, that Mr. Mosher, a reletaive of the Doane's bad been up to see him and said he tbonght if he gave him $50 and gave up the f300 notes, wbich be held against tbe Doanes, be conld get the oase dropped. Mr. White says the boy was badly scared and he finally agreed to do that. Stoukwell says Mrs. Doane in fooling threw sorne feed on him, and he in fnn tripped her np and leaving her sitting on the gronud went on abont his work. Stockwell's friends say if the offeuse was so flagrant as to warrant bis arrest and confineinent in jail for a week, it is very strauge tbat it staoald be droppped for any oonsideration. "Stockwell's friends are now taking steps to find ont if those wbo accepted tbe hard-earned money of tbe boy took a legal conrse. Tliey claim they will raise $500, if necessary, to get the boy jnstice. "Henry M. White, of Nortbville, will head the list in taking the necessary steps and there wil] be no delay in bringing the matter up. " Tbe officers state that yoong Stookwell piactioally admitted the orime charged and tbat the settlement was made in the interests of the boy, mnoh of the floating talk'beiug based npon a misapprebension of the facts, and express a willingnees to reopeu tbe case. A Saginaw attcrney bas been retajned by tbe friends of Stookwell, who expiess a determiuaton to goto the bottum of the affair.
