The state of Ne-w York appropriated f9,000,000 dollars last year for the improvement of its canals. It is nrw claimed tbat this rnoney was extravagantly wasted and the state is asked to appropiiate $7,000,000 more to finish the improvements which the f 9, 000, 000 appropriation was to hav made. Nw York needs another Samuel J. Tilden for governor. In this day. of descendants societies, it is not snrprising to learn of the organization of a sooiety of women in this oonntry oalled the "Order of the Crown" with a membership limited to the "lineal desoendants of kings and qneens. " There are varions schemes for evading the American spirit and the American constitntion which declares against titles of nobility. Hnman nature is alike the world over. The Register, worries beoanse the Argns asked its readers to enquire of their repnblican friends if they had been asked to join the blooks of ten invited in eacb township by the astuta field secretary, and asks if any one was ever iefnsed admission. We do not know as any one has been refneed, bnt we dont think any one wonld ask for admission into an invitation affair, with membership limited to blocks of ten. Self respecting men do not ask for invitations wbere they are evidently not wanted. The field secretary of the repnblioan post ofBce club must have received some advance tips from Governor Pingree. At least he has religiously followed out the Governor's advice given in nis address to the Miohigan Dairymen's Assooiation at Ypsilanti, Wednesday afternoon, when after, giving his views on the railroads he said : "If yon have suoh views yon should keep them to: yoorself or yon will never be appointed to federal office. " While the astnte field seoretary has been an ardenl Pingree inan, supporting him before his first nomination and pntting him down as a star at the coming bauquet, yet he has been eloqnently silent regarding that Buffalo speech of tbe governor and the bnrning corporation questions now before the 'public.
