Oue of the most iuteresting features of our export trade during 1897, noted in the report ou foreign trade by the departrnent af agriculture, is the reinarkable increase that took place iu the quautity of ludían corn disposed oí abroad, the total shipments of the yeat aggregatiug as high as 176,916,305 bushels, and thus üurpassiug by a wide margin all previous records. The exports of the year preceding, although reaching the exceptionally high aggregate of 99,992,885 bushels, wereexceeded iu 1897 by more than 75,000,000 busbels. It ís also noted that the sbipments of corn during the past year, while less iu value, were in quantity more than twice as large as the exports of wheat aud also much larger than those of wheat and wheat flour combined. The valué of the corn sent to fcreign markets in 1897 was $54,087,152 as against $87,836,862 in 1896. In the two years mentioned the average export price per bushei declined from 87.8 ceuts to 30.0 ceuts.
