A drawing teacher in the upper regious of the borough of Mauhattau tells me of a cnrious instance of what she calis tiiBcvescent feshnessof the metropolitan youth. Tommy was the most incorrigible pupil in that particular room, making the half hour spent there daily oue of mingled doubt and anguish of spirit to the drawing teacher. The other day Tommy was evidently engaged in some new form of mischief. His drawing pad lay upon the desk before him and his hauds were bovering' over it, now swooping down at one side of the paper, now at the ofcher, as if corralling some unwilliug ant or other insect seeking to escape. "Tommy," said the drawing teacher suddenly and sharply, "what are you doing?" "Nothin, " was Tommy's instant reply. Then he added, "Nothin but keepin this 'ere dawg from ruunin away. " "What dog?" queried the drawing teacher. "I see no dog. What do you mean?" "Course ye don't see nodawg," said Tommy, ceasiug his gymnastics under her sharp glauce and straighteuing up. "Yer too f ar away." The other scholars were all attention by this time, which was precisely what Tommy wanted, and he assumed a look of nnemiling innocence as he continued, "I drored a runnin dawg, not a standin still one, an I was a-headin 'ira off so's he wouldn't ruu off th' tablet an git oa th' floor. " The other children laughed uproari'ously at this, whereupon Tommy surveyed them with such au assumption of eurprised indignation that their mirth was redoubled. The teacher was now genuinely augry. She was a matter of fact young woman to wbom normal school methods were both law and gospel, and here was a flagrant case of downright falsehood that must be exposed as an awful esample to the entire grade of pupils. She walked slowly and firmly down tha aisle and picked np Tommy's tablet. The white sheet was nnsullied by a single mark of any kind. "Tommy," she said sternly, eshibitïng the sheet to the pupils, "thero isn't v. dog or anything else here. " "Course there isn't, "said the unabashed Tommy. "Wha'd I teil ye? Ye made me set up, an he got away. He
