Key West, Fia., April 26.- The first life lost in the war with Spain was recorded when Quartermaster Johnson of th arunboat Helena succumbed to wounds accidentally received while in the line of duty. Johnson's revolver dropped from ï ts holster while he was at the head of a prize crew aboard the Mig-uel Jover. A cartridge exploded when the revolver struck the deck, the ball entering the quartermaster's left side.
