By the will of the late Dr. Elizabeth H. Bates, of Fort Chester, N. Y., the university will receive a bequest of $135,000. The income from this bequest will go towards establishing a chair in the medical department devoted to diseases of women and ehildren . It will be known as the Bates professorship. At present the estáte is burdened with au annuity of $1,200 for the benefit of an elderly lady, aged 84. On her death, however, the estáte will be free from all incumb ranees, and it is expected that it will yield at least $6,000 a year. At flrst Mrs. Bates intended to give this money to Harvard, but some friend in the west persuaded her to remémber the University of Michigan. Dr. Bates was an alumnae of the University of Pennsylvania.
