On Saturday Illinois rspeated last year's performance and shut out the U. of AI. by a score of 3-0. Pruf. and Mrs. W. H. Pettee were called to Boston Taesday by the death of her brother. De. A. W. Haidle bas gone to Negaunee to lócate for the practica of bis profession as a dentist. Co. B, of the nniversity, bas elected the following offioers: Captain, O. S. Blanchard, '98 law; first lieutenant, Ford, '00 law ; second lieutenant, Barnett. '99 deut: Dr. W. B. Hinsdale attended tbe meetings of the Ohio State Medioal society at Uolumbus, Ohio, this week. He read a paper ou "Tbe Cause and Signifícanos of Certain Skin Symptoms in Disease. " T. V. Hngbes, instructor in tbe law departmeut, has resigned bis position to accept one in tbe University of Illinois at a greater salary than be was getting here. He will begin nis duties tbere in the f all. Drs. Frederick G. Novy, W. J. Herdman, V. O. Vaughan, James G. Lynds, ,T. P. McMnrrioh, G. C. Huber and A. S. Warthin read papers at the meeting of the Michigan State Medical society iu Detroit Friday. The Fruit and Flower Mission committee will give another danoe in the gymnasium sometime in the near future. The last dance was thoronghly successful, espeoially froin a financial standpoint. Over $100 being cleared for the Mission. The students of Yale University have deoided to uiake a gift to the United States cruiser "Yale" of two VicarMaxim guns for the bow of tbo boat. The cost of the two guns, with freigbt oharges, will be 5,200, and different Yale alumni have already guaranteed 13,500. The Yale undergraduates will make up the rest of tbe som by private subscription. Parke, Davis & Co., tbe big manufacturing obemists of Detroit, have given to the university a gradúate soholarship in general chemistry of $500, tbe amouni' to b available at the beginning of next sohool year. The samefirm gave a similar scholarship before, but it lapsed three years ago. Work utider it will begin at the commencement of the next college year. The fresbman banquet went ofi Friday night very quietly and peacefully. Six policemen kept tbe street in front of Granger's academy, where the banqaet was held, olear, and did not have veiy muob work to do at that. Company G, of the Second Regiment, M. N. G., is composed alinost entirely of Michigan alumni from Grand Rapids. At the cali for troops tbia oompany was immediately formed among the Grand Rapids boys, most of wbom are ooilege men and especially from the ü. of M. E. Berkey Jones, of the olass of '99, is captain of the company. At ooilege Mr. Jones was popular and well known throughout the university. Michigan won another victory Friday night when Charles Simons was awarded first honor in the Northern Oratorical League contest. The other representativos finished in the following order: Northwestern, sacond; Oberlin, third; Iowa, fourth; Chicago, flfth; Wisoonsin, sixth. Mr. Simons went beyond all of his previous efforts. He held tbe andience in perfect attention and when he had finished, theie was no doubt as to the verdict. The contest as a whole is considerad tbe best ever held. Dr. Charles B. Nancrede volunteered his services with the Michigan troops and has been made a major and first surgeon of tbe Third Regiment. Dr. Nancrede bas made a speoialty of gunshot wounds. While connected with the hospital in Philadelphia be was tbe first surgeon to opérate suocessfnlly for ganshor wounds, and has issued some valuable treatises on tbe subject. He bas recently been making investigations on the effect of the modern bullet. His place here will be taken by Dr. C. G. Darling.
