A Southern Pacific railroaü rreigai car containing seventy-five g'gantic tortoises from the Galápagos islands, in the Southern Pacific ocean, passed through this city last Saturday night. The shipment was in charge of Mr. C. M. Harris of Hyde Park, Mass., returning from an expedition sent out by the Rothschilds especially to secure the animáis. Mr. Harris stated that he had been about ten months, elght of which were spent on the islands, making the trip and securing the tortoises. He said that he was sure he had got all that were on the islands, and excepting those he had, he thought there were no others in existence. He had comered the market, as it were. He had spent about $10,000, and valued the collection at $30,000. He had secured some specimens that belonget to a species that was suppoaed to be extinct, and was only to be found on these islands. The animáis variec much in slze, some weighing severa hundred pounds, while others were much smaller. Some of the largest were said to be at least 1,000 years old They were all in a semi-torpid condi tion as the weather was somewhat cool' and they live in a warm climate Cincinnati Commercial Tribune.
