The provinces of Tacna and Arica, formerly belonging to Peru, but now held by Chili subject to ransom, are in a fair way to some day again be Peruvian territory. The Peruvian government will receive this year as a result of the tax on salt a revenue of 400,000 soles ($164,800) and for eleven months of the last fiscal year 458,678 soles ($188,975.34) were paid into her coffers from the same source. The administrative expenses connected with this tax amount to about 37 per cent of the total amount collected, so that there will be this year. something over $100,000 to apply to the ransom of these provinces. During the eleven months mentioned above $118,993.43 were so applied.
