The 31st Michigan has been paid off, for the tirst time since they left Island Lake. Major Sirk received 24 fine night shirts froin the ladies in Ypsilanti last Thursday - for use in the hospitals. A. K. Browne, of Co. G, 32d Michigan, an Ana Arbor boy, was hit in the face by a swifty pitched ball, while playiug ball at Tarnpa Taesday. W. B. Richraond, medie 99, private in Co. A, has been transferred to the medical purveyor office as clerk to the regular army officer who has charge of all the medical supplies for the camp. Brig.-Gen. C. P. Rose, a gradúate of West Point and for years a New York National Guardsman has been put in command of the First Brigade of the Second División of the First Army Corps, in which the Sist Michigan is. Mayor Kirk, of Adrián, who recently visited the Sist at Chickamauga states that the boys wouldn't trade Col. Gardener for a little gold soldier. All of the regiment is in love with him. He is an ideal officer and eoinmands universal respect in the camp. He is a strict disciplinarían, always watching details and is neyer idle hiniself. For instance, he will occasionally appear unannounced at the mess tent, look over the preparations for dinner, stir up the pots and kettles, smell of the meat, taste of the provender and make such suggestions as he deerns proper regarding the cooking, and if anythiug is found wrong in the materials f urnished, a protest will go up to headquarters that will make the quartermaster-general's spurs jingle. Another instance is a story told about his sudden appearance from behind a tree near the guard house. Of course there was a grand tumbling to f all into line to show due respect for the colonel. He would then compliment the boys, suggest to them what to do in a case of emergency, and pass on. He is good to his men and proud of the Michigan boys throughout.
