THe government weigtvs tñe mailt evry four years. For conremience ths country i3 dlvtded into dlstricts anfl the mails are weighed at different times. All mail is weighed on enter ing the car and weighed on being un loaded. The work is performed on th mail cars when practicable and at offices and stations when conditions ara not favorable for the former plan. The contracts with the general government are upon a basis of a certain amount of money per mile, according to weight of mail carried. Padding of the mails during the quadriennial weighing is prohibited and severely punished when discovered. The government pays for the weight of the sacks and pouches as well as for the weight of mail matter.
