Yesterday's list of marine disastei bere caine near being rounded out by the loss of life, says the Marqnetta Mining Journal. The victim is a ooi lege student who belonga in one of the np-the-road towns. He oame home frona college on the steamer India which got in here late last evening Between the boat and the doek there is a spaoe of perhaps flve feet. The oollegian, who is a nattyyoung gentleman and who was dressed in the hight of Aun Arbor fasbiou, was standiDg on tbe doek with bis baok to the boat. He wore "pinober" eye-glasses, was carryiug an umbrella, a telesoope and was chewing gum. He was standing near the gang plank, on the dook, with his baok to the boat, watohing passengers oome off. ThoDghtlessiy be took a step baok. Tbe umbrella and the telsscope flew upward and the collegian dropped down splash into the water. Some men who were standing handy by braced themselves between the fender of the steamer and the edge of the wharf and reaohed down and pulled him out. He hadn't a dry thread on hito when they landed him on tbe dock, and be was spitting water like a patent atomizer, but still chewing his ?um. The fellow was half drowned, but the ridioulous spectacle he made chewing gum under difficulties strunk :he fancy of the crowd and a good ;augh went up when it was seeu tbat he had not been serioosly injared by bis inrolantary bath.
