An Electric Mail Carrier
An intereeting device for the prompt delivery of letters to the tenants of the upper floorg in lofty houses Is employed in Oeneva. On the ground floor is a letter box for e&ch of the floors above. When a leter ig dropped into one of the boxes, it makes an electric contact, Wbich not only sets a bell ringing on tli floor for which the letter is intended, but also opens the valve of a watertank on that floor, by means of which a cylinder, connected with the ïtter box by cords and pulley, is filled rlth water. When full, the cylinder escendg and pulls up the letter box. Tbe latter, on reaching is destination, utomatirailv dumps its contenta, whlie at the same instant the cylinder discharges its water. The box now outweighs the cylinder, and accordingly dcends, lifting the latter to its original position.
