Andrew J. Sawyer for ;he legislature. His friends urge that a second term should be aooorded him as a rightful courtesy. They point oat ;hat his presenoe in the state house of representativos as an able defender of the nniversity is as desirable and as neoessary as it was during the last term, when he did rnnoh to stem the tide of opposition to state assistauce for the great eduoationai institution. Mr. Sawyer's opponeuts are prone to adtnit the trnth of this reasoning, bnt base their opposition to him entirely npon his position as a persistent antiPiDgree leader aud as an obstruotionist in the path of all anti-railroad legislation. Sheriff "Billy" Jndson, in response to instruotions froru Gov. Pingree, leacte the opposition to Mr. Sawyer. He asserts that Sawyer stands no real chanoe of seouring the renom' ination.
