In the Frencb quarries of St. Triphou stone is sawed with steel wire cables moistened with wet sand aDd passiug in an endless rope over a series of pulleys. The wire, which runs froni 1,000 to 1,200 feet per minute, is charged bh it enters the cut with a jet of water and siliceous saud, which iorms the cutfciug material. A running cable of öOO feet can make a ent 100 feet long.
