The Campaign
If the Republican party would show the courage it has always elaimed to possess, Gov. Pingree would be overwhelmed ia the coming state convention, even at the expense of a possible temporary defeat. If the Democratie party will support its own ticket solidly, the self-respecting Republicana will adminlster at the polls the rebuke to Pingreeism the party itself seems afrald to give. We believe the tide Is turnin?. Many of our party associates who had i notion to vote for Pingree have deeided that the nomination of Whiting leaves them no choice - it is a duty to vote for our ticket straight - and we hope and trust that not a Michigan silver voter will be so false to himself as to vote for tiie burlesque reformer, Pingree. who has never accomplishod a reform, but. on the contrary, has wasted public funds for private ends. Despitë the war, despite pretended mtagonism to corporate power, desijite bis professed love for the farmer and workingman, the chance to relieve the iommonwealth of the burden of Pinjreeism is good if taken advantage of. His party leaders are apparently too owardly to shake him off, but there ire thousands of decent Republicans 'n Michigan who will repudÃate him and yote for honest Justin R. Whiting.
