William Layton is visiting friends in Indiana. Milton Crane bas pnrohased the Palmer bonse on Tolen st. Dr. Chapin bas retnrned froin his Petoskey visifc moch refreshed by the trip. Mrs. F. S. Bray and daugbter, of Delray, are the gnests of J. Bray and family on Wabasb st. Milton Clark has opened a store in Delta, Ohio. Good wishes follow bina in this business ventare. A brigbt day was Sunday, Sept. 4, in thejlifeof Williarn Laxton, one of the brave 18 wbo voluntered to draw the fire of the Spanish battery, at Santiago de Cuba, when he stepped off the train at Milan, and was greeted by a hearty oheer froru buudreds of people who bad gathered to show their appreoiation of trne bravery. Truly Will was the bero of the hour. He was esoorted to a beautifully deoorated carriage drawn by a fine span of horses who wore the national colors. Dr. Laxton and family were seated inside and as sood as Will was seated the procession headed by the Milan Coruet Band, started and bundreds followed in line to tha Laxton re8idence on Maumoe st., where chaers and oongtatulations were repeated. William Laxton is home on a 60 days' furloogh but thinks he will not be oalled back for aotive service. Hnndreds of the Milan people witnessed a sad home oomiDg Tuesday morning when Roscoe Allen brought the remains of bis son Clayton L. Allen of Co. F, 34th Michigan Volunteers. Clayton died of exhanstion after reaohing New York. He was an exemplary young man in every way. His parend are heart broken and his host of friends ruoura deeply his loss. The funeral servioes were beid at the nouse Tuesday afternoon, Rev. F. O. Jones offloiating. The Island Lake drum oorps was in attendance. The remains were laid to rest in a grave in Marble Park oemetery beantifully deoorated by loving hands. He was buried wich military honors. The floral offerings were beautif ui beyond desoription ptesented by relatives, the Christiau Endeavor tbe M. E. ohurch and the oitizens of Milan. The family have the sympathy of the whole community.
