The United States consumed last year 2,096,263 tons of sugar. Of ctomestic product were 289,000 tons cane, 41,347 beet, 5,000 maple and 300 sorghum; of foreign, 1,066,680 tons cane, 616,635 raw beet and 77,288 refined. The conaumption of foreign sugars represents the production of 15,790,000 tons (2,000 pounds) beets, requiring 158 factories of 100,000 capacity (1,000 tons ?er day), or 316 factories of 50,000 tons capacity.
