A cut of the velvet bean is here reproduced froin The Rural New Yorker. It is from a photograph sent by a Georgia correspondent. The bean is described as a strong vigorous grower, the blossoms attractive to the eye, but of an odor objectionable to most people. According to seedsmen and others, a larga acreage has been planted in ida aud the gulf states, and small plantings for experiment at the north have been numerons. The bean is describod in a bulletin of the Florida station as follows: "The pods are very thick and leutaory, do not crack open when ripo and ure difficult to open by hand. The pods contain frorn three to flve large, plmnp, ñne looking beans, irregularly colored with purplish and brownish patdies. The foliage is nmch like that of other beans. The viues grow from 10 to 20 f eet in leugth. "
