Russia is not generally looked upon as a progressive country, b'a, so íar as women are concerned, tUey certainly do keep abreast, if not a little anead oL the times. The latest step forward taken by Russian women is to become railway guards. With the female porter or signal woman France has already made us acquainted, and a very quaint figure she cuts. The new field of labor upon which the, more or less, fair Russian has entered, seems a little odd at the first glance, but a moment's consideration will show it to be a not inappropriate calling after all, since the duties of the female guard are confined to attendance upon the compartments reserved for ladies. In our own country the female guard is not a necessity, since these special carriasos are not provided. If they were, tr.3 services of women attendants upon sucia compartments would be valued and the female guard might become as indispensable to the railway traveler as the stewardess is to those journeying by sea. Apropos of Russia and its ideas of women's "rights," it is odd to learn that while we are arguing whether or not a wotnan in "rationals" ought to be received in an hotel or inn, the Russian pólice are strictly enforcing the law that no female cyclist shall ride through the streets of St. Petersburg unless ciad in bifurcated garments.
