ADDITION TO THE JAIL.

One is Recommended to Be Built to Accommodate Prisoners.

There has been for some years considerable talk about the arrangements at the jail not being exactly as they should be or rather that the jail was illy constructed. Now come the superintendents of the poor and, in their report just made, say: "The jail is too small to accommodate those confined there and an addition should be built." There is, however, but little prospect of such an addition being built this year. There are now confined in the jail 16 males and one female. Of these 14 are serving sentence, two are awaiting sentence, two are detained for trial and two are awaiting commitment. During the past six months there have been 178 males and 8 females in the jail. These have been in jail for the following causes: Drunk 115, vagrancy 17, larceny 2, waifs 3, prostitutes 2, assault with intent to do great bodily harm 2, and obscene language, obscenity, assault with intent to kill, grand larceny, assault and battery, carrying concealed weapons, adultery, truancy, non-support, burglary, throwing stones, assault, insane and begging, one each. The eight females were in jail on the following charges: Larceny 2, prostitutes 2, drunk, vagrancy, obscene language and insane, one each.
