Use Of Carrier Pigeons In War

Pigeon fanciers have been anxiously looking forward to the time when military authorities would bring carrier pigeons into use for transmitting messages. Just why this has not been done does not appear. Surely, during the time that the cables were cut and no news was procurable, it might have been an excellent idea to furnish a number of these birds to each vessel with the view of sending home messages in the shortest possible time. The suggestion is made, however, that gallant commanders was a part of the plan. To cut off communication and then fight and take the chances is a perhaps the freedom allowed to our peculiarity of some of our bravest officers. They want to take the chances, as it were, and think that their men fight all the better when they have reason to suppose that the country is anxiously waiting for tidings from them, but will not hear unless there is some great achievement to report. However this may be, arrangements are being made to test the value of pigeons for the purpose of carrying news.
