Ran In 1876
And Traveled Seven Hundred Miles to Defeat.
J. C. Higgins, of Detroit, traveling representative of the Metallic Casket Co. , was in the city yesterday.
Mr. Higgins is an old Washtenaw county man having kept books for seven years or Goodale & Henley at Delhi.
"Those were prosperous times," said Mr. Higgins.
"The firm did a business at their mills of from $250,000 to $300,000 a year.
In '76 I was the republican candidate for county clerk. I had a fine little mare that I paid $300 for, which I drove 700 miles in that campaign.
Of course I was not elected.
No republican was that year."
