In the Detroit River Last Night at Belle Isle.

The last boat was pulling away from the Belle Isle wharf at 10:50 o'clock Tuesday night when two young men emerged from the darkness and made flying-jumps for the rear end of the Garland. One young man landed safely and pulled himself over into the boat. The other was not so fortunate. His feet slipped as he struck the boat and, in another moment, he was hanging between the boat and wharf. Then he lost his hold, fell back into the darkness and was seen no more.

The young man's name was Clifford E. Smith, of Toledo, O. He had been attending the university at Ann Arbor and was spending the day in the city in the company of Doanly Bowden, of Kalamazoo, another Ann Arbor man. Both young men visited the island last night and not being acquainted with the time schedule of the boats, were just too late to walk down the gang plank of the Garland.

Both were confident, however, of catching the boat and jumped for it. Bowden landed safely, but Smith went down into the water. He struggled for a few seconds and his companion threw a chair and life preserver to him. He seemed dazed, however, and, after a few weak efforts to hang to the spiles went down. He did not come up again.Free Press.

Clifford Smith left college last year and was a '02, lit. Bowden's name can not be found in the directory.

Barton Smith, the boy's father, was a member of the '75 law class and is to deliver the commencement day oration this year. The father and mother took the boy's remains to Toledo and were much stricken with grief.
