The Sheriff's Wife

In Mason Stopped Horse Thieving Boys.

Sheriff Gillen returned f rom Mason Tuesday evening with John and Willie VanFleet who had been arrested there on the charge of stealing a horse from Mr. Kelly, the livery man, of Dexter. The two boys are 16 and 13. They are sons of a freight conductor on the Michigan Central who lives in Detroit. The older boy is said to have been in the reform school twice, The two young boys who have been staying in Dexter, hired the horse Sunday morning paying $1 for it. They drove two or three miles beyond Mason where they visited a cousin. They drove back to Mason and were driving around the city while the officers who had been given a description of them were out hunting for them. They passed the jail. The sheriff 's wife saw them and ran in front of the horse stopping it. She called to her son who was some distance away and as he carne the oldest boys jumped from the rig and ran. He was soon caught and said if he hadn't known it was the sheriff's wife who stopped them he would have driven right over her. The boys will be taken to Dexter this afternoon by County Agent Peter J Lehman and arraigned before Justice Buchanan.
