Detroit, Mich. , June 11---- Coroner Hoffman's jury in the case of Clifford E. Smith, of Toledo, the young U. of M. student who lost his life while attempting to board the ferry steamer at Belle Isle about 10:10 o'clock Tuesday night, rendered the following verdict Saturday.

"Clifford E. Smith came to his death on the night of June 6 by being crushed between the steamer Garland and the Belle Isle ferry dock, and through being drowned in the Detroit river. This jury censures the Detroit & Belle Isle Ferry company and the park and boulevard commission for their negligence in not having the gates at the dock closed and locked after the last boat left the island."

Donald G. Bondeman, Smith's chum, testified that the gate used for incoming passengers was wide open and he ran through it. Had the gates been locked, Bondeman declared that the accident could never have occurred. Another witness at the inquest was Supt. Horace W. Avery, of the ferry company, who admitted that it was the custom to leave one of the gates open after business hours.
