The average distance of discovery ol a torpedo-boat by the searchlight from a battleship has been calculated to ba 781 yards and the greatest distance 2,000 yards. Thus, taking the distanca at whioh the torpedo can be fired with effect at 500 yards, it will be gsner ally fcund that a torpedo-boat will have to cross about 300 yards under fire frora the ship she is attacking and it will take the little craft about half a minute to do thiu.
