She Knew His Footsteps.

They are telling a story up on the West Side - which may or may not be true - about a rising young politician who has unusually large feet. His mother is a lovable old woman, and quite deaf. She lives in a flat in the neighborhood of Grant's tomb, and is always delighted by a visit from her son. When the United States cruiser Brooklyn, which was anchored in the Hudson, off the tomb, on Memorial day, fired a salute of twenty-one guns, the old lady was observed to start, fix her cap and smooth down her apron. Then she said, with a sweet smile. "George is coming; I hear his footsteps on the stairs." --New York Tribune
