STAND FIFTH ON THE LIST

Washtenaw Must be a Rich County.

STATE TAXES FOR 1899

Is a Record Breaker As Well As a Pocket Book Breaker.

Lansing-, Mich., Sept. 15.- Auditor General Dix to day completed the apportionment of the state taxes of Michigan for the year 1899, the total of which is $3,725,835.01 and constitutes the largest levy for state purposes in the history of Michigan. The taxes for 1899 are more than the taxes for two years of Gov. Winans' administration, and are nearly 40 per cent higher than for the past several years.

The amount of state taxes apportioned to the several counties of the state show that there are only four counties which will be obliged to pay more than Washtenaw. They are as follows: Wayne, $691,155.71; Kent, $177,003.29; Houghton, $143,288.38; Saginaw, $121,373.69. Washtenaw's share is established at $104,516.23. Neither Jackson, Oakland or Lenawee have to contribute as much as this county.

The only satisfaction Washtenaw can get is the fact that it will receive in an indirect way $279,275 for the university and $109,275 for the State Normal College.

That Washtenaw comes pretty near paying up all its debts to the state is shown by the fact that of a total of $134,249.77, which the various counties were owing the state July 1, 1899, Washtenaw was only indebted $254.34.

The growth in state taxes paid by Washtenaw county may best be shown by the following table of state taxes apportioned to Washtenaw in the past 20 years together with the name of the governor at the time:
