Lieut. Wm. R. Means, a Hero at Manilla.

Congress'll Honor Him

Swam a River, Drew Plans of Spanish Fortifications for the Attack.

William R. Means, who was originally a '00 law, has returned to the university and has taken up the work in the junior law class.

At the outbreak of the Spanish war, he enlisted as a private in a Colorado company. In three days he was made a sergeant and very shortly thereafter got a lieutenant's commission.

The Colorado regiment was sent to Manila, and Lieut. Means was given the opportunity of showing what kind of stuff he was made of. He swam the Pasig River, and, notwithstanding the vigilance of the Spanish guards, got near enough to the fortifications to draw plans of the same. In fact, he was so close that he actually touched the walls of Manila, and was the first man on the American side to do so.

He came very near being shot when returning to the American lines, but escaped.

It was according to the plans he furnished the American generals that the attack was made on Manila. For his daring bravery he has been recommended by the War Department for a medal of honor to be voted by Congress.
